The Early 2000s Called, And We Want The Old VS Fashion Show Back

Recently, the world witnessed the return of an iconic fashion spectacle often dubbed the Super Bowl of fashion: The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Known for its high-energy runway, elaborate sets, musical performances, and, of course, the signature angel wings, the show has long been a cultural phenomenon. After a six-year hiatus, Victoria’s Secret decided it was time to revive the beloved event, sparking excitement and nostalgia among fans worldwide.

This year, the brand took a fresh approach by broadcasting the show live, a departure from previous years where performances were recorded twice and later edited for TV. The show featured the return of many well-known Victoria’s Secret Angels, including Candice Swanepoel, Behati Prinsloo, Taylor Hill, Tyra Banks, and more. While the spectacle captivated audiences, it also left some wondering whether the company was holding back or aiming for a new direction altogether, one that didn’t entirely resonate with the loyal fanbase.

Despite featuring a stunning array of models and dazzling outfits, the show felt different. Many fans missed the fantasy feel that once defined the Victoria’s Secret runway.

We expected to see signature elements like dramatic blowouts, sparkling bling, larger-than-life wings, and the glamour that used to make the show feel like a dream world come to life. Instead, this year’s production seemed to shift focus toward the musical performances, with less emphasis on the models and their intricate outfits. The performances certainly add to the overall experience, but traditionally, the runway and the Angels are the true stars of the show.

Although the show boasted appearances by iconic models such as Candice Swanepoel, Tyra Banks, and even a cameo from Kate Moss, there was still something missing: the legendary Fantasy Bra. For years, the Fantasy Bra has been a centerpiece, a wearable work of art that many viewers dreamt of wearing themselves.

We also missed the signature voluminous hair and the creative, over-the-top wings that once defined the brand’s aesthetic. Fans noticed a stark contrast between the elaborate wings of the past and the toned-down versions featured this year, and many couldn’t help but feel that the brand had dialed back its creativity.

Of course, we recognize that the fashion show has faced criticism over the years, particularly regarding its portrayal of beauty standards, lack of body diversity, and exclusivity. However, it’s possible to bring back the iconic elements of the show while embracing a more inclusive approach. Imagine if Victoria’s Secret showcased a diverse array of body types in the same glamorous, fantastical style that originally drew viewers in.

By including models with various body shapes and sizes, they could have created a runway experience that resonates with today’s audience, allowing fans to see themselves represented while indulging in the show’s trademark opulence.

In the end, while this year’s show was a beautiful display of fashion and performance, it seems that Victoria’s Secret may have missed an opportunity to recapture the magic that made their fashion show a global sensation. Hopefully, as the brand evolves, they’ll find a way to blend the beloved elements of the past with a modern, inclusive vision that excites and inspires fans once again.
