SMALL BUSINESS OF THE MONTH OF MARCH- Get The Pinterest Nails Of Your Dreams With SetsbyJazmine

Having some pretty nails is one of the best accessories a girl could ever have and over the years, they have gotten more & more extravagant & detailed. Nails are practically a girls best friend. If you know me, you know I get my nails done at least every other month. (It’s important to give your nails a break!) Each time they’re done it’s always something different, but one thing that never changes is the nail tech. Since the first appointment, Jazmine has never failed to meet or exceed my expectations when it comes to my sets.

I had the opportunity to ask Jazmine some questions about SetsbyJazmine and what inspired her to start her business.

Tell us who you are & what you do

My name is Jazmine and I am 22 years old and run my own business doing nails! I also have my bachelor’s degree in Child Development and graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 2023!

Tell us about your business

I started my business in October of 2021 and I have been loving it ever since! I honestly never thought I would be able to make it a full-time job as the wasn’t my intention in the beginning. I started doing nails in my bedroom and practiced on my mom, sister, and cousin. I remember being so anxious when I would do their nails because I wanted them to love the outcome and I was very hard on myself in the beginning. After 1 month of practicing, I pitched the idea to my dad that I was interested in taking clients and was wondering if he would be willing to build me a room in the back of my house, and he was extremely supportive and started building my nail room within a few days of that conversation. The week my dad completed building my nail room I began promoting my nail business on my personal Instagram page and began building my clientele that way!

What got you into that line of business ?

I have always had so much love for the beauty industry and I also had a few friends who had started their own business years prior. One of my main influences was my close friend Celine, she introduced me to Gel X and had also started her own lash business “Celine’s Dreams” before I started my nail business. She pushed me to start learning how to do nails so that I could also have my own business and I am extremely thankful that she did!

Have you been supporting yourself or have others been supporting you ?

The month I began learning how to do nails on myself, I quit my job which was very risky and scary to do but I was determined to make my business succeed. I knew that if I didn’t put my all into it, I would not be as determined to push myself to learn and take risky steps. Ever since that day, I have been supporting myself financially and was able to pay off my school tuition and purchase my own car! My parents have been my #1 supporters from day 1 and I am so grateful for them! My close friends have also been extremely supportive which I love. Also, many of my clients have become some of the closest people in my life and the most supportive when it comes to my business and my personal life which I never thought would happen. I have grown so many friendships though starting my nail business and I cherish every single one of them.

What is one of the hardest things in owning a business like yours that people find “easy”?

One of the hardest things in owning a business is managing my personal life and my business life. For example, I have to balance posting consistently, responding back to all my clients, personal life issues, etc all on my own.

What’s your favorite part about it?

Building relationships with my clients and of course watching my clients have so much confidence with their pretty nails!

What are some pros & cons to your business?

Some pros are being my own boss of course! Being able to take time off when needed and also being able to dress comfy 24/7. Some cons would definitely be the back/neck pain that I have from slouching and looking down for 12 hours a day.

What are some difficulties you face in owning a business?

Some difficulties I face I would say are balancing my personal and work life and making time for myself.

Who is your dream client & why?

My dream client would definitely be Karol G, I would love to do her nails because she is one of my favorite artists at the moment and I think that would be a cool experience!

Is there anything you would change about your business?

The only thing I would change about my business is having an assistant run my social media account for me! That is the one thing is struggle the most with but that is something I plan on getting better at over time.

Any tips for other small business owners or anyone who wants to pursue the same thing as you?

Just start! I know it can be very intimidating at first but trust me when I say just put your all into it and good things will come of it! Also, TikTok and YouTube are your best friends when wanting to learn how to do nails!
